Turn on the scanner before starting the Macintosh. It is recommendedthat SCSI devices, such as scanners, be powered up before your Macintoshis turned on. Some models will lock up if SCSI devices are activated whilethe computer is running. It is safe to turn the scanner off while the computeris running though.

When the Scanner Solutions CD is inserted into the CD-ROM drive, theMacintosh responds with the message "This disk is unreadable by thisMacintosh. Do you want to initialize the disk?"

Scanner Solutions is a dual-platform CD containing both Macintosh andWindows files. If the Macintosh extension "Foreign File Access"is disabled, the computer will not recognize the PC files and will considerthe CD "blank." Foreign File Access must be enabled for the CDto be recognized by the Macintosh.

    3. Select the Extensions Manager.

    4. Locate "Foreign File Access" on the list and click it sothat it becomes checkmarked.

    5. Close the Extensions Manager.

    6. Click on the Special menu and select Restart.

    7. After Restarting, the Macintosh will recognize the CD properly. Formore information on installing from the CD-ROM, consult Document# 3540 for instructions on installing from Scanner Solutions on a Macintosh.

Solution:

The Plug-in is not properly installed in the Color-It! program. The"Mustek F/B Scanner…" Plug-in must be installed into the Plug-insfolder in the Color-It Stuff folder. Consult Document# 3570 for a complete Color-It! Tutorial and instructions on properPlug-in placement.

Textbridge has not been linked with the scanner ISIS driver. From theTextbridge setup screen:

    1. Click on the Apple menu in the upper-left corner and select Chooser.

"When I try to scan something, I get a messagetelling me to check the SCSI I.D. number."

Description:

When the PreScan or Scan buttons are clicked, a message is displayedthat reads "No Scanner Found, Please Check the SCSI I.D."

Solutions:

The scanner is using an improper SCSI I.D. number, may be using an olderdriver, or may need to be terminated. Consult Document# 3560 for information on SCSI I.D. settings and how to change them.

"I keep getting message saying I don’t have enoughmemory to scan my image."

Description:

The scanner will PreScan an image, but will not allow a full scan becauseof insufficient memory.

Solutions:

Check the size of the image in kilobytes on the scanner controls screen. The image size in KB or kilobytes must be smaller than your available RAMor Virtual Memory settings. Everything in the thousands place or abovein kilobytes equals a megabyte (MB). Therefore, a scan with a size of 200,322KB is 200+ megabytes and your Macintosh’s built in RAM memory or VirtualMemory should be higher than 200 to scan in the image. If your image sizeis larger than your available memory, you must:

    1. Increase your Virtual Memory amount or:

    2. Reduce the file size by cropping the image or changing the dpi setting. For more information on Virtual Memory, see below. For more informationon scanner settings, consult the Color-It! Tutorial,Document # 3570.

"How do I adjust my Virtual Memory?"

Description:

You need your Virtual Memory turned on to make larger scans.

Solutions:

Virtual Memory is a function that uses areas of hard disk space to actas extra RAM memory. Here is how to enable Virtual Memory and adjust thesettings:

    1. Click on the Apple menu and select Control Panels.

    2. Click on the Memory control panel.

    3. When the Memory control panel appears, locate the Virtual Memoryarea. The icon looks like a fat Macintosh.

    4. Click the button to turn Virtual Memory on or off.

    5. Click the Select Hard Disk button to assign the hard disk you wishto use for Virtual Memory. If you only have an internal hard disk, leavethat as the default.

    6. Click the up and down arrows on the right of the screen to increaseor decrease the amount of megabytes of Virtual Memory you wish to have. You should allow yourself between 50 to 100 MB of Virtual Memory. The displayabove the amount will tell you how much free hard disk space you have toassign as Virtual Memory. Once it is assigned as Virtual Memory, this spacecannot be used by other programs.

    7. All changes made to Virtual Memory will take effect only after theMacintosh is rebooted. Close the Memory control panel and click on theSpecial menu and select Restart to reboot your computer with the new settingsin place.

"My system locks up when scanning in the Color-It!program."
